Summer Housing in NYC

Housing possibilities at and near Columbia Teachers College (525 West 120th St., New York, NY 10027)

This is an informal, unofficial list generated by STEMteachersNYC, for those interested in finding a place to stay so as to attend our Summer Modeling Instruction Workshops. There is an extraordinary variety of possibilities for summer housing in the NYC metro region. Many, if not most, of them can be found via a Web search. If you find something and have a satisfactory experience staying there, please let us know so we can add it to this list.

Columbia Teachers College has dormitory-type rooms available to the public over the summer. See URL below for details. The rooms have a twin bed and bathroom but no kitchen, with access to shared kitchen facilities. Participants in past workshops have found the accommodations very satisfactory but not luxurious. Rates and other information are available via phone: 212.678.3235, or on the Web:

Hostels International. There is a large Youth Hostel located at 104th and Amsterdam, 16 blocks (.8 mile) from Teachers College: http://www.hinewyork.org/

Columbia University, Columbia College, and Barnard College. Columbia University (which includes a Law School, Medical School, and many other graduate schools) has a large number of graduate dormitories and apartments separate from Teachers College. Columbia College and Barnard College (a women’s college, which, like Teachers College, is part of Columbia University) also have dormitories nearby. The Law School, the Medical School, the other graduate schools, and/or the University as a whole, may make rooms available to visitors in the same way that Teachers College does. STEMteachersNYC has not yet researched this, so it may well be worthwhile to explore the websites of the University, of individual graduate schools, and of Columbia College and Barnard College. Please let us know if you find something worthwhile. Note that the Medical School and Columbia Presbyterian-NY Hospital are located 48 blocks (2.5 miles) north of Teachers College, on a direct subway line connection (#1 train). There are also many other colleges and universities in the region; the two largest are the various units of the City University of NY (CUNY) and NYU.

Hotels. These are all located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and require a walk, or bus/subway ride, of 20 to 30 blocks (1 to 1.5 miles), to Teachers College at W 120th St. There are, of course, many, many other hotels and housing facilities available in NYC and the surrounding region.
